I teach drama and environmental education. I'm about to start a 3 day camp on environmental education and am looking at ways of using game mechanics to excite kids and reward and increase intrinsic motivators.

I'm Alex Peake of Primer Labs. http://www.primerlabs.com

We're about to announce our first big game Code Hero because we won an Editor's Choice Blue Ribbon Award at Maker Faire 2011. So much for stealth mode! Code Hero is like Guitar Hero for coding: It's a game about making games that teaches computer programming in a first-person shooter like Portal.

I appreciate that you are letting students create games instead of just letting them play. They learn so much better when they are making rather than passively receiving information. What kind of narrative capabilities are built into the system? I'm a big advocate of having children tell stories. Giving them some facts and asking them to incorporate them into a story is a pretty effective way to help them remember those facts.

Agreed! I played some Globaloria games and I was particularly interested by one from which I learned that music students do much better on language and math. You're doing a great job making kids into game developers and teachers at the same time.

DanHope: I totally agree about the general MO of applying learning to creating games about stuff. Code Hero teaches Unity3D game development to encourage players to become developers and students to become teachers through the medium of games.
